I have earned my Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Thanks to my education, I am confident on my knowledge on the background of chronic and infectious diseases. I have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and am able to work well in a team environment. I am very proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and also able to learn new concepts quickly. For example, I used computer programs such as SAS and SPSS on my thesis project on tuberculosis stigma within a 2008 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey. In conclusion, I am very excited to help improve the quality of life within the United States.
Education
Thanks to my education, I learn how to apply and interpret the principles of Epidemiology. I am quite familiar with the etiology of infectious and chronic diseases. I also used SAS and SPSS for several school assignments. I used these programs to evaluate stigma status within a 2008 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey. Stigma status was defined as whether participants would keep their family member's tuberculosis diagnosis a secret or don't know/depends on the situation. For this project, I calculated CMH odds ratio value between the outcome and the selected socio-demographic variables. This project has helped me gain confidence in using SAS and SPSS.
During this time, I was exposed to the different disciplines of Chemistry. These disciplines include Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry. I learned how to properly conduct myself within a laboratory setting. This degree required an attention to detail and precision. I used different lab equipment to successfully complete each experiment. I also used Microsoft Excel to create titration curves and absorbance-transmittance graphs. Earning this degree required perseverance and dedication. This educational experience has greatly helped improve my work ethic and organizational skills.
Experience
I went back to my Chemistry background to work for Eckert and Ziegler Analytics as a temporary lab technician. This company creates radioactive isotopes and other standards. I was responsible for maintaining the lab. I made chemical dilutions and carrier solutions. This job requires an attention to detail and team work. These attributes are very important for any Public Health job. I also had to multi-task for this job.
Fayette CARE Clinic offers free medical care for Fayette County residents under the 200% federal poverty line. To earn my Master of Public Health, I completed my 300 hour practicum hour requirement. From this experience, I learned how to use an online patient record system called Med Services. I also worked on a hypertension education program. This program suggested ways to improve the patient's lifestyle. In addition, the pre and post test study design was used to evaluate their knowledge on hypertension. The results have shown that the patients have a fairly good understanding on the risk factors of hypertension. The problem is that change in lifestyle can be very difficult.
I worked as a lab assistant for the Chemistry Supply Room. I was responsible for maintaining the General Chemistry laboratories. I had to make different chemicals for a specific experiment. This job requires an attention to detail and sense of urgency. During this time, the Chemistry Supply Room was understaffed. We successfully got through the summer semester.
I worked as a Math tutor at the Student Success Center. I tutored Pre-Calculus, Calculus I, Trigonometry, and College Algebra. Effective communication was required for this job. I had to take a different approach for each appointment. I worked as part of a team to help improve the average grade point average for Valdosta State University.
