Position Objective:

The Department of Surgical Research at Luminis Health is seeking an experienced researcher to apply human factors techniques to studies in surgical ergonomics and Operating Room optimization in the healthcare environment. Current protocols include analyzing operating room workflow to improve patient outcomes; improving the delivery of endoscopic, minimally invasive and robotic surgery via simulation-based research; and developing surgical-field image-augmentation systems using image analytic techniques. In addition, this position will contribute to the design and implementation of clinical outcomes research across the department of surgery.

This position is a two-year term with high likelihood of extension for high performing candidates. It reports to the Director of Research and Chairman of Surgery. The position is based in the James and Sylvia Earl Simulation to Advance Innovation and Learning (SAIL) Center, at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. SAIL is a unique facility dedicated to the advancement and practice of medicine through research, training and innovation designed to improve surgical and medical procedures and outcomes for patients. The individual in this role will have the opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary environment with clinical, simulation, and research personnel.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Employ human factors and/or cognitive science methods, which may include eye tracking, cognitive modeling, and observational data collection methods, as well as skills in data manipulation, analysis, and visualization.
  2. Conduct data gathering and review, statistical analysis, abstract and manuscript preparation for independent and collaborative research projects.
  3. Effectively disseminate research results via journal publications and presentations at regional and national scientific meetings.
  4. Develop protocols for human factors and outcomes research initiatives across the department of surgical research.
  5. Secure extramural funding for ongoing human factors research. Other relevant duties, as assigned.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Human Factors, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Industrial Engineering, Informatics or a related field. Ph.D preferred.
  • Previous experience in healthcare is preferred, but is not required.
  • Experience with statistical analysis and research methods is desired.
