Job Description

Job Summary:

Assigned to the Security Services Department, this position is responsible for monitoring access control locations and units housing at risk patients. Responsibilities involve patient monitoring related to potential security issues or threats such as suspected or confirmed abuse as well as registration of persons entering Medical Center facilities. The Security Access Officer regularly communicate with Medical Center Security Supervisors and assist in assessment and identification of threats as well as threat mitigation plans.


Education / Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED, public contact experience.
  • Experience in patient care preferred, including behavioral health.


Licensure, Certification and / or Registration:

  • Valid NC driver license; other licensures and certifications as appropriate.
  • Medical Assistant experience/certification desirable.
  • Must satisfactorily complete appropriate behavioral intervention training.


Essential Functions:

  1. Monitors patient environment for potential security related threats.
  2. Monitors persons entering the patient environment.
  3. Communicates clearly and concisely with Security Supervisors and medical staff.
  4. Interacts with patients, families and visitors.
  5. Interacts with clinical staff to maintain a safe patient environment.
  6. Conducts visitor registration activity at designated facilities.
  7. Conducts metal screening activity as directed based on locale.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.



  • Basic Computer skills; ability to conduct manual and automated record entry
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to adapt to changing work environment including standing/sitting for extended periods



  • This position works a set schedule but may be called in to respond to staff shortages and emergencies
  • May be exposed to unpleasant odors
  • Contact with patients, visitors, and staff under a wide variety of circumstances
