What You Will Do:
Under the general supervision of the Respiratory Therapist/Supervisor, the Respiratory Assistant is an entry-level position in both patient care areas and in the equipment area of Respiratory Care (RC) designed to develop additional skills and experience. The position is responsible for maintaining a supply of transport oxygen on all inpatient units, emergency department, and critical areas in accordance with the Joint Commission safety standards.
The Respiratory Assistant is responsible for the assembly, transport, and disinfecting of equipment; is responsible for maintaining an appropriate (PAR) level of equipment in the various respiratory work areas. The position performs routine calibration of equipment used in the patient care areas and assists the Respiratory Therapists with various procedures and tasks, as directed. The incumbent for this position will be able to validate comprehension of learning through verbal and hands-on demonstration of skills taught.
1. Set-up, maintain and clean various types of respiratory care equipment in order to provide safe patient care:
2. Maintain supply of transport oxygen including cylinders and or liquid oxygen.
Maintain supply of oxygen cylinders on all inpatient units, emergency department, and clinic areas
Daily quality checks/rounds of all clinical areas housing oxygen cylinders to ensure the storage and volume are in accordance with regularity/Joint Commission safety standards
Correct and report all findings outside of these guidelines
3. Assist in the assembly; routine maintenance and cleaning of various types of respiratory care equipment.
Assemble the equipment as it is returned form Central Services for future use.
Disinfect equipment prior to calibration and assembly.
Transport dirty equipment to RT reprocessing area using appropriate infection control techniques
Transport equipment such as ventilator between in-patient units and procedure areas as directed by the Respiratory Care Practitioner.
Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of RT equipment bins and up boards.
4. Maintain appropriate levels of equipment in the various respiratory care work areas.
On a daily basis will take inventory of equipment needing to be replaced on the various inpatient units, including ICU’s.
Daily will check all procedure trays, etc. that are used by or are the responsibility of Respiratory Care, to ensure that they contain all the required equipment.
On a daily basis check the level of oxygen in the oxygen cylinders and replace when needed in the Emergency Department.
Obtain needed equipment for Respiratory Care Practitioner when requested.
What You Need to Be Successful:
Required: One year of college sciences or respiratory school preferred
Life Support Certification: (Check all that apply)
Basic Life Support – Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
Education/Knowledge (see attached explanation sheet)
High school graduation or equivalent and two years of experience related work or equivalent
education/experience preferably in a healthcare setting. Prepare or review specifications of safety
equipment, ensuring that proper features are present and that items conform to health and safety
Attained Level: Entry level
Preferred: Prior/Recent Military Service
