JOB SUMMARY: Collects blood specimens for the clinical laboratories. Functions as an intermediary between the patient, patient caregivers, and the laboratories. Assures proper specimen collection and identification in compliance with section policies and procedures. Performs appropriate patient procedures in accordance with age-specific guidelines for the age groups served.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or GED equivalent. One-year phlebotomy experience preferred.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: Required certification through the

2. Assures accurate and timely collection of blood specimens, according to departmental practices.
3. Assures accurate identification and delivery of patient samples to appropriate lab sections.
4. Follows proper safety and identification procedures when dealing with patients and/or specimens under any circumstance or environment.
5. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of phlebotomy by serving as a willing resource to staff and applying knowledge in daily routines.
6. Improves work skills through self-study and continuing education.
7. Contributes to the smooth and efficient operation of the section and department.
8. Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approval policies and procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne and/or airborne diseases.
9. Exhibits and promotes the professional image of laboratories in accordance with hospital, department, and professional society philosophies, goals and standards of laboratory testing.
10. Provides age appropriate specimen collection in accordance with age specific guidelines for school age, adolescents, early adults, middle adults and/or late adults.
