Under the supervision of the Medical Records Supervisor, the Medical Records Specialist provides assistance to the supervisor in the following areas within Health Information Management (HIM): Informatics, Physician Liaison, Processing, Quality/Data Collection, and Release of Information. This position is the first line of contact for the teams listed and is knowledgeable in the aspects of the front line duties of each area and may assist for coverage or team vacancy. Responsible for daily functions and develops process improvement in collaboration with the Medical Records Supervisor. Assists Medical Records Supervisor with team schedules and time off requests. Demonstrates positive communication with HIM Supervisors, Manager, Medical Staff, Patients, team members and departments outside of HIM.
Graduate of an approved Health Information Management Technology or Medical Secretarial program required.
Bachelor’s degree in a health related field preferred.
Three years Health Information Management experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Strong knowledge of computer applications preferred.
Proficiency in data entry.
Possesses working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Self-motivated individual with personal integrity with good organizational skills.
Effective teaching skills.
Interest in, and enthusiasm for, computerization and automation and their benefits to the Health Information Management department and the hospital.
Ability to organize and coordinate the work of other team members.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities.
Knowledge of fax, printer, and copying machines.
Planning, organizing and filing aptitude.
Excellent communication skills necessary to approach medical staff, hospital personnel, ancillary department, etc., for any clarification regarding record questions, documentation concerns and training.
Ability to accept and adapt to new and changing work requirements/assignments and priorities.
Demonstrates a cooperative, positive and helpful attitude toward peers.
Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) preferred.
