Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Provide care to patients as directed by the provider, including preparing patients for examination, administering medications, assisting provider with procedures and performing various tests. The Medical Assistant will actively participate as a member of the healthcare team to engage patients, families, and caregivers in the coordination of patient care.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent required.  Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program required.

Experience:

  1. One year of medical office and patient care experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Knowledge of medical practice and patient care, medical equipment and instruments and examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of physician office procedures and medical terminology. Basic knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding guidelines.   Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions.  Ability to assist in performing a variety of treatments and procedures, taking vital signs and recording and maintaining test results.  Ability to record data accurately using a computer.  Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

License/Certification/Registration:

  1. Medical Assistant certification required. Certification is required within 6 months from date of hire or transfer into the Medical Assistant position.
  2. BLS certification required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Fast paced, stressful, high traffic medical office.  May be exposed to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, bodily fluids and other conditions common to a clinic environment.  May require working irregular hours.  May require travel to other offices.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Requires full range body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination.  May require standing and walking for extended periods of time. Occasional lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 50 pounds.  Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepare patients for examination and treatment including taking patient histories, vital signs and height and weight measurements.
  • Assist provider with various tests and procedures.
  • Administer non-controlled prescribed injections and medications, observe reactions and document in the patient’s file.
  • Perform and document various tests and procedures including EKGs, audiometry, glucose testing and holter monitoring.
  • Prepare exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments.
  • Prepare, sterilize and maintain supplies and equipment for patient treatments.
  • Answer and return telephone calls according to provider instructions and record messages for the provider (depending on specialty).
  • Assist with scheduling patient referrals, appointments, testing and admission to other facilities.
  • Call pharmacies with non-narcotic patient prescriptions, excluding controlled substances, according to the provider’s instructions.
  • Perform front desk/administrative duties as required.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities and processes.
  • Perform other duties as required.
