Qualifications

 

Required:

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions or work performed
  • Ability to adapt/handle a wide variety of situations
  • Ability to deal effectively with patients of various socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, on the phone, and in writing
  • Demonstrate organizational skills to effectively complete duties/tasks independently and on a timely basis
  • Knowledge of general ophthalmic disorders, medical terminology, procedures, and routine eyeglass prescriptions
  • Advanced knowledge in operation of ophthalmic patient testing equipment
  • Knowledge of program objectives, policies and procedures
  • Knowledge and skill in administering ophthalmic tests to people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Interpersonal skills to maintain comfortable and cooperative working relationships with patients, physicians and staff
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and the internet
  • Ability to maintain a California driver’s license
  • Ability to push, pull or carry 30 lbs. or more
  • Ability to work with medical students, undergrads, and volunteers
  • Availability to work weekends and evenings at health fairs, homeless shelters or other events
  • Flexibility in adapting to new assignments.

Preferred:

  • JCAHPO Certification as Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)
  • Ability to translate in Spanish/English
