Director of Pharmacy Operations

Department Description: Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is part of Beth Israel Lahey Health and one of the nation’s leading research and academic medical centers that is a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. BIDMC consists of two Boston Campuses including 77 critical care beds, Level I Trauma Center, Level III NICU, Cancer Center and BMT Program, solid organ transplant program, academic research, and several large ambulatory and urgent care clinics throughout the Boston area.
The Director of Pharmacy Operations is responsible for the leadership and direction of the operational functions associated with pharmacy services, including central pharmacy operations, ambulatory/infusion operations, oversight of 4 cleanrooms, and pharmacy informatics. The Director of Pharmacy Operations oversees the managers in these key operational areas while optimizing staffing, workflow and drug utilization. The Director of Pharmacy Operations works closely with the Chief Pharmacy Officer on capital and operating budgets, including operational oversight of approximately 180 FTEs and $100M+ annual pharmaceutical budget.Job Location: Boston, MA

Job Summary: The Director of Pharmacy Operations is responsible for leading, developing and coordinating hospital pharmacy operations and services for the BIDMC hospital and hospital based clinics. This position evaluates and develops pharmacy services that provide and enhance quality patient care, while promoting fiscal responsibility in the utilization of resources. The Director of Pharmacy ensures that the pharmacy department adheres to all local, state and federal laws regarding the practice of pharmacy. This position directly reports to the Chief Pharmacy Officer.

Essential Responsibilities:

    1. Plans, develops, coordinates and implements all activities related to hospital and hospital-based clinic pharmacy services. Ensures the delivery of efficient, optimal and quality pharmacy services for inpatients and outpatients. Develops programs, goals and objectives consistent with those of the Department of Pharmacy Service's overall strategic plan and initiatives.
    2. Develops an organizational plan for inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services consistent with the scope of services offered/provided by the pharmacy. Responsible to lead and support managers and supervisors in developing and improving services to create optimal performance levels.
    3. Assures adequate staffing levels and performs periodic staffing level assessments. Ensures effective allocation of resources for patient care.
    4. Manages staff resources by overseeing the recruiting, selecting, hiring and orienting of qualified individuals. Evaluates staff performance in an accurate, consistent, objective and timely manner. Develops core position hiring strategies and ensures opportunities for professional development for pharmacy staff.
    5. Creates a cohesive pharmacy team committed to providing efficient and quality pharmacy services.
    6. Develops and maintains pharmacy policies and procedures. Ensures compliance with state, federal and applicable regulatory agency standards, including but not limited to DPH, DEA, and the Joint Commission.
    7. Assures pharmacy related continuous improvement in quality and patient safety, including but not limited to implementation of National Patient Safety Standards. Remains current on developing trends in quality improvement and patient safety and coordinates with Pharmacy leaders to implement best practices.
    8. Develops operational and capital budgets and manages operating expenses and key indicators within the budget for the BIDMC hospital and hospital-based clinics. Develops, implements, coordinates, monitors, evaluates and integrates pharmacy services that contribute to the overall success and financial viability of the pharmacy department.
    9. Participates on hospital and medical staff committees and serves as the professional pharmacy resource for medical, nursing, other healthcare professionals and hospital leaders.
    10. Has the authority to direct and support managers with functional area responsibilities. Has the direct responsibility to undertake the following employment actions: hiring, termination, corrective action and performance reviews. Direct Reports: 2-3 Indirect Reports: 21-50
    1. Assists in planning, monitoring and/or managing budget in functional area of department.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in PharmD required. Master's degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Finance, or like degree preferred.
  2. License Massachusetts Pharmacist required., and Registration Massachusetts Pharmacist required.
  3. 5-8 years related work experience required and 3-5 years supervisory/management experience required
  4. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

  7. Team Work: Ability to lead collaborative teams for larger projects or groups both internal and external to the Medical Center and across functional areas. Results have implications for the management and operations of multiple areas of the organization.
  8. Customer Service: Ability to lead operational initiatives to meet or exceed customer service standards and expectations in assigned unit(s) and/or across multiple areas in a timely and respectful manner.
