The Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center delivers advanced cancer care with personalized treatment, clinical excellence and compassionate care.  The Pharmacy Department is recruiting for a Clinical Specialist to support inpatient and outpatient hematology/oncology and cellular therapy services. The Clinical Specialist will be expected to participate in multidisciplinary patient care rounds, collaborate with providers and nursing staff, clinically review and assess chemotherapy treatment plans, and dispense oncolytic medications.  This position will support patient and provider education, guideline/policy development, and pharmacy student precepting.

1. Practices in accordance with the state and federal laws, rules, and regulations, including but not limited to Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, Department of Public Health, the Food and DrugAdministration, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Maintains certification and credentials in accordance with the Board of Registration and adheres to institutional policies and procedures.

 

2. Reviews and verifies medication orders with consideration, including but not limited to the following patient specific parameters: diagnosis, weight/body surface area, age, allergies, organ function, laboratory values, medication duplication, drug interactions. Clarifies orders deemed to be inappropriate, incomplete, or otherwise unclear with the prescriber in a timely manner.

 

3. Documents and communicates pertinent information and discussion with the healthcare team and pharmacy staff to ensure continuity of care.

 

4. Provides drug information to physicians, nurses and other health care professionals.

 

5. Checks and verifies sterile and non-sterile medications.

 

6. Supervises the activities of students, technicians, and residents within the pharmacist area of practice.

 

7. Promotes a culture of patient safety by submittingmedication related events and near misses.

 

8. Completes daily pharmacy surveillance tool monitoring, including follow-up and documentation, as well as other daily patient care initiatives and relevant reports.

 

9. Works collaboratively with all pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy personnel. Upholds a culture of respect and teamwork across the Pharmacy Department.

 

10. Precepts pharmacy students, resident rotations, andresident-led quality improvement projects. May serve as Residency Program Coordinator or Residency Program Director

 

11. Regularly participates in department initiatives including but not limited to supporting formulary stewardship, presenting new medication requests at Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, creating and maintaining policies and procedures, conducting assessments of workflows, and/or developing departmental tools and resources.

 

12. Supports a specific core area of practice through interdisciplinary education, ongoing specialty training and as a resource for Pharmacy staff.

 

13. Updates clinical guidelines and presents hospital wide educational initiatives.

 

14. Serves on hospital interdisciplinary committees or workgroups to improve process and quality outcomes.

 

15. Supports IRB-approved research activities, medication use evaluations, or cost-savings initiatives.

 

16. Other duties as assigned

 

Required Qualifications:

 

1. PGY 1 + 1-3 years OR PYG2 OR 3-5 years of experience in clinical specialty area
