The Opportunity
Chief Medical Officer, University of Colorado Hospital
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at University of Colorado Hospital (UCHA) plays a pivotal role in championing clinical effectiveness, quality, and patient safety. This position will provide essential clinical input for strategic UCHA and UCHealth initiatives and includes membership in the UCHealth Board Quality Committee and UCHA Board. The CMO supervises the UCHA Chief Quality Officer, Associate Chief Medical Officers (ACMOs), and, in collaboration with University of Colorado School of Medicine clinical leaders, oversees physicians in Clinical and Medical Director roles. They work closely with medical staff leadership, various executives, the Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Financial Officer, all physicians and other providers, as well as the UCHA Board Patient Safety and Quality Committee and process improvement teams to enhance clinical care quality and patient safety throughout UCHA.
The CMO is expected to lead and develop innovative and measurable programs aimed at improving patient safety, quality of care, and health outcomes. They are accountable for creating and managing systems that facilitate the transfer of knowledge and process improvement. Additionally, in collaboration with School of Medicine clinical leadership, they work to ensure optimal patient access to UCHA clinical facilities and programs and foster effective communication between UCHA Medical Staff and external clinical care providers and organizations. The role necessitates effective collaboration with administrative and clinical leadership, including employees, house staff, volunteers, and providers, to promote a culture of service excellence. The CMO also actively participates in the development of clinical service lines.
Reporting Relationships
Reports to: President and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Colorado Hospital and the UCHealth System Chief Medical Officer. The CMO has a matrixed reporting relationship with the Senior Associate Dean (SAD) for Clinical affairs in the SOM as Associate Dean.
Direct reports: UCHA Chief Quality Officer, UCHA ACMOs, and Director of Medical Staff Services
Responsibilities
Physician Executive Leadership
- Provides leadership for and oversight of physicians and APPs in designated leadership roles supported by UCHA
- In partnership with CU SOM Clinical Leadership, holds Clinical and Medical Directors accountable for unit/service/clinic performance, including quality, throughput and access, and appropriate utilization of resources.
- Promotes an environment that will attract and retain high quality physicians, APPs and other workforce members.
- Clinical Operations
- Facilitates the evaluation and optimization of care management, process management, patient safety, and outcomes to assess the appropriateness of care including length of stay and resource utilization.
- Develops and engages physicians, APPs and trainees in a data-driven model that uses best practices and evidence-based medicine to improve clinical outcomes and reduce costs.
- Works in collaboration with the COO to develop effective clinical coverage models that balance patient safety, quality, and cost.
- Provides direct oversight and leadership for Associate Chief Medical Officers (ACMOs)
Clinical Operations

Medical Staff Leadership and Oversight
- Build relationships with physicians and APPs and lead change management within the medical staffs by motivating and supporting physicians within the management model, by leading conversations specific to conflict management and by mentoring medical staff members to lead conversations that will manage conflict.
- Work closely with the SOM and UCHA medical staff leadership to ensure compliance with the Code of Conduct.
- Work with Risk Management to assess and manage risk factors in order to reduce liability and ensure regulatory compliance.
Quality and Safety / Process Improvement
- Supervises the CQO, provides leadership and expertise for hospital quality, safety and clinical effectiveness, establishes and maintain an environment of quality and cost improvement that is data driven and provides systems to review utilization of resources and objectively measure patient outcomes.
- Participates as a leader in the interdisciplinary approach to managing clinical quality, safety and patient experience. Accountable for overall Vizient performance as a Comprehensive Academic Medical Center, in collaboration with the COO and CNO.
- Maintain a working knowledge of Joint Commission, applicable national, state and local laws and regulations, the compliance program and code of ethics as well as other policies and procedures.
- Present clinical quality initiatives and results as appropriate at local, state and national conferences and forums to facilitate communication and best practice sharing.
- Lead and assist working committees in the standardization of care and clinical processes and actively participate in organizational quality improvement teams.
- Medical Staff Leadership and Oversight

Strategic Initiatives
- In collaboration with UCHA/UCHealth leadership and School of Medicine clinical leaders, lead prioritization of clinical programs across and within service lines.
- Facilitate development of innovative cutting edge multi-disciplinary programs that serve the region and nation.
- Effectively partner with the Senior Management team and be an advocate and consensus builder for the clinical outcomes and mission and help distinguish UCHA and UCHealth as a regional and national benchmark for clinical outcomes and care.
- Remain abreast of national, state and local regulations and legislation which impact the healthcare profession. Liaison with government relations to be a clinical voice on policy and health related legislative issues.
- Promote clinical synergies to encourage an environment of cooperation, collegiality, trust and quality.
- Support the academic affiliation with the CU SOM. Work with Finance, the Chairs and the SOM leadership to recommend to the CEO the resource priorities and requirements to enhance and strengthen clinical programs including necessary faculty and GME recruitments.
Candidate Qualifications

The successful candidate will meet the following requirements:
Education/Certification
- Graduate of an accredited medical school
- A master’s degree in health administration, public health or business administration preferred
- 5 years’ experience in Senior-level medical staff, academic or association leadership required
- Qualification for an academic appointment at the minimum of Associate Professor level
- Certification in management or physician leadership preferred.
- Unrestricted Colorado Board of Medical Examiners physician license
- Board certified in a clinical specialty area and extensive experience in clinical practice
- Certification in management or physician leadership preferred.
Qualifications
- Leadership position in a national or regional physician organization preferred.
- Strong academic medical center experience.
- Experience in financial management and an understanding of healthcare economics.
- Understands all aspects of clinical quality: optimal, efficient, patient-driven processes of care; reliable, safe and effective care; and optimal health-related outcomes for individuals and populations.
- Experience that demonstrates knowledge of process improvement infrastructure including how to implement decision tools, clinical protocols and guidelines and care management outcome assessments.
- Providing strategic direction for the hospital and health system on issues related to clinical program development.
