Position Summary: 

This position supports the CVOR Anesthesiologists and Anesthesia Team members by stocking, preparing and setting up the appropriate equipment and supplies for every anesthesia case.  This includes connecting monitoring lines, preparing infusion sets, and operate all physiologic monitors employed by the Anesthesia Department.  In addition, the employee must be able to learn to operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on a variety of equipment.  Such equipment currently includes anesthesia machines with capnographs and pulse oximeters, portable monitors, Hotlines, Level One rapid infusion units, Bis Huggers, and BIS monitors.  The employee will rotate through the CVOR call schedule.



Essential Duties:

  • Stocks and assures appropriate function of all anesthesia supplies and equipment within the anesthesia work area of every functioning OR.
  • Assures appropriate drugs are available to anesthesia staff.
  • Sets up IV and pressure bags for specialty lines, including arterial lines and central lines.
  • Assists in Central Line Placement under the supervision of the anesthesiologist.
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of Eco Machine.
  • Maintains cardiac IV poles
  • Retrieving cardiac drip pole from pharmacy and sets up nitro drip
  • Sets up and calibrates physiologic monitors appropriate to level of training
  • Has knowledge of sterile technique.
  • Removes all special and reusable material after cases and responsible for cleaning in accordance with Infection Control policies.
  • Maintains stock in OR 9, EV Lab, and Cath Lab.
  • Maintains bronchoscopy cart and all supplies used for intubation of thoracic surgery patients.
  • Assumes basic knowledge of transport monitors and defibrillators.
  • Available to respond to emergency requests for anesthetic supplies and equipment.  Requires careful and thoughtful response in a rushed and stressful environment.
  • Must acquire knowledge of equipment which is in use by members of the anesthesia team in order to perform routine maintenance and repairs.
  • Learning to adapt anesthesia systems to remote areas of the Medical Center at any time with appropriate supervision and in a timely manner.  This includes assembling and operating life support equipment including ventilators and transport motors.
  • Developing operational knowledge of laboratory equipment including blood gas analyzers, co-oximeters, glucometers, and activated clotting time.  Must understand quality control techniques and regulations in order to perform quality control procedures and calibrate equipment.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health error
  • Observes safety precautions at all times; uses protective wear, gloves, googles; uses proper body mechanics.
  • Follows standard precautions at all times.
  • Uses the principles of sterile technique per CMMC policy & AORN guidelines.
  • Performs proper scrubbing techniques per CMMC policy & AORN guidelines.
  • Performs proper sterile technique for gowning & gloving per CMMC policy & AORN guidelines.
  • Assists with surgeon supervision, tissue retraction as needed.
  • Obtains needed instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for each surgical case.
  • Ensures operation of equipment and sets up in appropriate location in the operating rooms.
  • Troubleshoots equipment and delivers minor maintenance if needed.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in the operation and maintenance of the autoclaves and Steris machines; uses correctly and proficiently.
  • Performs instrument room duties as needed.
  • Ensures patient privacy.
  • Delivers specimen to lab.
  • Checks specimen in appropriate area in lab with correct data needed.
  • Maintains working inventory and assures no supplies are outdated.
  • Assists in research, educational, and quality management activities as appropriate.
  • Customer Service: Interacts with all individuals in a consistent manner, providing attention, support, and assistance to foster an environment of exceptional personal service.
  • Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
  • Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  • Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.
  • Attends annual review and department in-services, as scheduled.
  • Attends staff meetings annually, reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department.
  • Performs job duties in a manner that maximizes expense control.
  •  Demonstrates an understanding of fire and electrical safety, infection control, body mechanics, and related areas, as appropriate to position.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information at all times.


Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Able to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic computer knowledge.

  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Additional languages preferred.
