Position Description

Under the supervision of a Medical Doctor (MD) or Audiology Doctor (AUD), assesses and treats persons with hearing, balance, and related disorders; including but not limited to hearing aids, cochlear implants, BAHA, balance function assessments & rehabilitation, electrophysiological measures of hearing and balance. May perform research related to hearing and vestibular problems.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Schedule patients for evaluation, treatment and enter patient information into the computer system.
  • Complete proper documentation , including evaluation, Audiology reports, and placement of an individualized care plan with functional goals in the patient's medical record within 24 hours of initial contact.
  • Assess the needs of the patients and document the information to provide appropriate instructions to the learner.
  • Assess the need for adaptive equipment, place an order for it, and demonstrate its use.
  • Plan, coordinate, and provide appropriate habilitative/rehabilitative intervention for the hearing impaired patient.
  • Assess and recommend needs for other services and participate in the discharge process.
  • Confer with the person(s) most closely associated with the active management of the patient and keep them informed of any additional patient needs, treatment modifications, and/or progress.

Required Qualifications

Currently enrolled in a terminal degree (MD, PhD, AUD) program of which this internship is a requirement for completion of the program

Preferred Qualifications

The audiology internship position is a 12 month fourth year Au.D. position beginning the summer after the completion of the students 3rd year in their respective Au.D. program. They will have the responsibility of providing audiological care including the completion of all required paperwork/documentation to patients of the Texas Tech Physicians Department of Otolaryngology – Audiology Services under the supervision of a licensed audiologist. The experience includes the provision of a full range of audiologic services to patients of all ages. Diagnostic services include behavioral and electrophysiologic assessment of hearing as well as comprehensive balance function testing. Treatment services include the selection, fitting and verification of hearing aid amplification and other assistive and implantable devices. Interns are encouraged to participate in clinic-based research. Minimum qualifications include: Bachelor's degree, current enrollment in Au.D. program and eligible to start their fourth year Au.D.externship. Applicant must be eligible for Texas Intern license.
