POSITION SUMMARY

Performs duties that provide a secure and safe environment to patients, staff, equipment and facilities of the Mount Nittany Health System.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

High School education or equivalent.

Experience:

Three years of Law enforcement, hospital security, corrections, military, state parole required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  1. Ability to communicate calmly and clearly in stressful situations.
  2. Ability to work with all departments in the health system.
  3. Interact positively with patients, visitors, and outside agencies.
  4. Ability to interact in a professional manner with external law enforcement agencies in the performance of job duties. (may include; Local and State Police, State Parole, FBI, Secret Service, U.S. Marshals)
  5. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the Bill of Rights and U.S. Constitution on how it relates to the function of a Mount Nittany Health Police Officer.
  6. Demonstrates the physical stamina and condition to perform the duties of the position.
  7. Ability to handle evidence control pertaining to MNH initiated criminal investigations.
  8.  Will be accountable for the transportation of those subjected to criminal arrest and subsequent    prosecution.
  9.  Maintain and further develop skill set needed to successfully perform duties as required by the judicial system. I.E. Centre County District Magistrates, Court of Common Pleas and Federal District Court.
  10.  Ability to operate under a ranked based department structure.
  11.  Critical decision making skills.
  12. Demonstrate and maintain standards set forth by the Commonwealth and Manager Security pertaining to the continuing education of PA Crimes Code, PA Vehicle Code and the PA Rules of Criminal Procedure.

License/Certification/Registration:

  1. Valid driver’s license required.
  2. Within three (3) months from the hire/transfer date, completes the Crisis Prevention Institute’s (CPI) Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training and renews every two years thereafter.
  3. IAHSS Healthcare Security Officer required within ninety (90) days of hire/transfer.
  4. Taser Certification required within thirty (30) days of hire/transfer.
  5. Documented attendance at an OC (Oleoresin Capsicum Spray) training required within thirty (30) days of hire/transfer.
  6. Meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and renews BLS every two years.
  7. Proof of successful completion of “Stop the Bleed” course.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Performs assigned duties per manual
    1. Follows written procedures daily as found in the Security Safety Manual.
    2. Reviews Security Manual and suggests revisions as necessary.
    3. Patrols campus and surrounding area utilizing various vehicles or on foot.
    4. Observes and checks suspicious vehicles and individuals.
    5. Perform building checks and assist with pedestrian and traffic management for special events.
    6. Traffic enforcement; enforce the provisions of the PA Motor Vehicle Code and campus regulations regarding motor vehicle use of campus.
    7. Answers questions and provides information to visitors and staff.
    8. Ability to handle evidence control pertaining to MNH initiated criminal investigations.
    9. Provide escort service for patients, staff, and visitors, as necessary or as directed. (safe walk program)
    10. Conduct searches according to department policy regarding customer service responsibilities, maintaining paperwork and property appropriately.
    11. Ability to professionally attend and testify during any court proceedings in regards to current or past incidents.
    12. Provide professional assistance to Children and Youth Services during their investigations on Mount Nittany property.
    13. Performs above duties as needed at Mount Nittany Medical Center and Mount Nittany Physician Group.
  2. Responds to emergency situations.
    1. Responds and assists with duties described in the Fire Plan, Disaster Plan
    2. Assists with development and implementation of Security & Life Safety Management Plans.
    3. Provide assistance as requested to clinical staff in the care and safety of patients, staff or visitors who are uncooperative. Respond to all such calls of assistance in a professional manner in accordance with facility standards and guidelines with respect to age-specific guidelines and competencies.
  3. Enforces health system policies.
    1. Advises employees, visitors, and patients daily on Visitor Policy, Smoking Policy, Parking Policy and Elevator Usage.
    2. Tickets violators according to the Parking Policy guidelines.  Refers other policy violations to supervisor daily.
  4. Prepares daily reports.
    1. Initiate and investigate any reports of incidents to include theft, suspicious activity, vandalism, personnel safety, patient related issues, and any other areas considered to be of importance in the day-to-day operation.
    2. Completes electronic event report for any event not consistent with routine operation or the routine care of the patient, or any event which has serious consequence as to a patient visitor quest or physician.
    3. Documents daily events using department reporting software.
  5. Provides vehicle assistance.
    1. Attempts to start disabled vehicles as requested.
    2. Attempts to unlock cars as requested.
  6. Conduct foot and vehicle patrols.
    1. Ability to perform foot patrols during an 8, 10 or 12 hour shift.
    2. Ability to remain on your feet for extended periods of time.
  7. Secure property and valuables
    1. Take custody of and secure patient valuables for storage.
    2. Provide secure transport and security for patient narcotics to the pharmacy
  8. Locks and unlocks doors.
    1. Lock and unlocks doors as per schedule.
    2. Locks and unlocks door as requested.
    3. Utilize access control software
  9. Operates Medical Center vehicles in a safe and courteous manner, abiding by the PA Vehicle Code.
  10. Follows department specific policies and procedures.
  11. Participates in unit sponsored hands on training
  12. Provides training and education to both Medical Center and Physician Group offices in areas of but not limited not limited to emergency evacuation plans, emergency preparedness, active threat training, personal safety, and situational awareness.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
