Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), a pinnacle of academic medical excellence and the largest entity within the Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) network, is an integrated health system newly forged to set new standards in care. We are seeking an exceptional nurse executive—dynamic, innovative, and experienced—to fill the position of Associate Chief Nurse Officer for Perioperative Services (ACNO, POS). Job Description:
THE OPPORTUNITY
The ACNO Perioperative plays a critical role within the perioperative service leadership team, overseeing operations with a keen focus on quality, safety, efficiency, and compliance. Responsibilities include developing clinical systems, processes, and standards to enhance surgical and procedural quality and efficiency, aligning with the organization's mission of delivering extraordinary care.
As a key stakeholder and leadership member of the operating room executive committee and other organizational committees, the ACNO contributes to four major areas: extraordinary care, personnel, world-class education and research, and financial health.
EXTRAORDINARY CARE
The perioperative team strives for safe, efficient, effective, equitable, and timely patient care. The ACNO ensures timely access to operating rooms while maintaining highest quality standards across all perioperative aspects.
- Oversee day-to-day operations in ORs, WPC, and PAT.
- Address escalated daily operational issues with leadership.
- Collaborate with the perioperative team, Surgical Departments, and Anesthesia to optimize scheduling and patient throughput.
- Maintain and enhance quality and safety in Perioperative areas, fostering a culture of safety and respect.

WORLD CLASS EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
As a national leader in medical and nursing education, BIDMC sets high standards across all departments, including perioperative areas. As ACNO, you will play a pivotal role in upholding and advancing these standards by:
- Plan and implement training programs for new staff.
- Develop and execute educational programs for perioperative team advancement.
- Represent the organization in national organizations like AORN, supporting staff participation.
- Guide staff in journal publication participation.
FINANCIAL HEALTH
The ACNO is expected to be a steward of our financial resources, enabling us to fulfill our mission. In this role, the ACNO will:
- Contribute to strategic planning for surgical services growth.
- Develop and implement operational plans to support surgical service expansion.
- Participate in planning, monitoring, and managing departmental budget.
- Assist in developing and managing annual capital and operating budgets for perioperative services.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
In the first year, the new ACNO for Perioperative Services is expected to achieve the following (unordered):
- Build strong relationships with the Vice President of Perioperative Services and colleagues in surgical departments, anesthesia, nursing, and the medical center.
- Establish trust and credibility with the perioperative team, physicians, and staff.
- Demonstrate approachable leadership, excellent communication, and team-building skills.
- Cultivate a culture of professionalism, accountability, and action.
The ideal candidate is a dynamic, confident nurse leader with strong communication and interpersonal skills. They excel in relationship management, possess excellent listening abilities, and demonstrate success in engaging and building relationships with physicians.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Healthcare Finance or Hospital Administration required. Doctoral degree in Nursing Practice or PhD in Business Admin, Healthcare Finance or Hospital Admin preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of related work experience, with 5-8 years of supervisory/management experience required.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive nursing leadership experience.
- Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
COMPETENCIES
Decision Making: Ability to make impactful decisions affecting perioperative services' management and operations, contributing to overall organizational strategy.
Problem Solving: Proficiency in resolving complex, abstract issues spanning Medical Center-wide concerns, utilizing creativity, resourcefulness, staff engagement, Lean diagnostic techniques, negotiation, and diplomacy to devise effective solutions.
Independence of Action: Capability to set direction and vision for supervised areas autonomously.
Written Communications: Skill in effectively communicating complex information in English in writing to staff, management, and external customers across functional levels.
Oral Communications: Proficiency in verbally conveying complex concepts in English, handling sensitive situations, resolving conflicts, negotiating, motivating, and persuading others.
Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate broad and comprehensive understanding of theories, concepts, practices, and policies, applying them in complex situations across multiple functional areas.
Team Work: Proficiency in leading and directing collaborative teams for large projects or groups, both internal and external to the Medical Center and across functional areas, with outcomes impacting organizational management and operations.
Customer Service: Capability to lead operational initiatives ensuring customer service standards and expectations are met or exceeded in assigned unit(s) and/or across multiple areas promptly and respectfully.
Physical Nature of the Job: Involves light work with occasional standing or movement throughout the hospital campus, exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
