Summary
Position Summary
Provides complex technical support and assistance to the Manager of the Cancer Data Management Department in the processes of abstracting, case finding, follow-up maintenance and research of all cancer cases reported at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System and other contract hospitals.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Associate’s degree including 2 semesters of Human Anatomy & Human Physiology college-level coursework
Experience
- Minimum of one-year experience in the cancer registry field.
- Computer skills and typing accuracy.
License/Registration/Certifications
- Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR)

Core Job Responsibilities
ABSTRACTING
- Abstracts all demographic, diagnostic, treatment and cancer specific data on each cancer patient directly into the Elekta Metriq computer system from the electronic patient folder (EPIC) and St. Francis.
- Codes each appropriate field within the data set for each cancer case according to Multiple Primary and Histology Coding Rules, FORDS, CAP Protocols and adheres to the S.C. Central Cancer Registry (SCCCR) requirements.
- Determines stage (extent of disease) for each case using the AJCC-TNM and Collaborative staging systems.
- Maintains acceptable time frame for abstracting cases within a maximum of 5 to 6 months from the date of first contact.
- Enters task description and hours worked in to MIDAS daily for Manager Review, and productivity documentation.
- Reviews and corrects any individual discrepancies within an abstract that are identified within the department through quality control, by the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry (SCCCR) edit program, and the Commission on Cancer (CoC) edit reports.
CASEFINDING (As Required)
- Performs Elekta Metriq System computer search for cases listed on the following reports and enters into the Elekta Metriq System as suspensed: Pathology & Cytology
- Assists with the EPIC Case finding Import
- Creates individual suspense file within the Elekta Metriq computer system for all new cancer cases. Enters name, date of diagnosis, medical record number, demographics, primary site, histology, and grade, date of first contact, doctor, scopes, OP procedures and pathology.
- In the performance of case finding activities, updates any existing cases in the Elekta Metriq System with current date of last contact, date of death, spread of any metastatic disease or any additional pertinent follow-up information. Deletes any suspense cases, which are determined to be unreportable.
- Enters task description and hours worked into MIDAS daily for manager review, and productivity documentation.
FOLLOW-UP (As Required)
- Monthly initiates direct case follow-up by mail to patients and contacts. Reviews SSDI in METRIQ, EPIC, and Centricity. When necessary contacts the patient, family, friends, long-term care facilities, etc., by telephone, using sensitivity and tact and maintaining confidentiality.
