Bilingual Mental Health Worker

-I was the first Montgomery County, MD public safety employee not a native speaker to qualify for the Basic Level Multilingual pay for Spanish;

-Set up an Intensive Out-Patient Clinic, writing the required SOPs needed for the clinic to begin operation and ensuring a therapeutic milieu in the area provided;

-Provided mentoring to patients in Activities of Daily Living;

-Resolved pay and other administrative issues for as many as 30 subordinate soldiers;

-Conducted an 8 hour neuro-psychological testing battery to Gulf War Veterans;

-Improved the processing speed of Medical Evaluation Boards (MEBs) for Reserve and National Guard soldiers by 30 days;

-Improved accountability of Reserve and National Guard soldiers by 90%;

-Developed and implemented system by which MEB progress could be tracked;

-Insured that medical records generated by the MEB process were returned to the soldier or their home unit and were not destroyed;

-Became sufficiently proficient in Spanish while stationed in Panama to serve as a medical interpreter during Operation Just Cause 14 months after arriving there without the benefit of formal study

-Served as interpreter for a veterinary unit and local farmers in Costa Rica

-Provided addictions counseling to Hispanic clients in the Adams-Morgan area of Washington, D.C. and suburban Maryland in Spanish;

-Provided community resource orientation, problem solving groups and ADL coaching to homeless chemically dependent men in Spanish in a treatment shelter in Adams Morgan;

- Provided custody and security in all three facilities operated by the Montgomery County Department of Corrections being the only staff member available to process or attend to the needs of Hispanic inmates;

- In all settings, documented patient/client behavior using SOAP, Chronological, and PIE formats;

- Audited charted as directed by local standards;

-Processed admission of new patients to the psychiatric ward;

-Obtained patients vital signs and entered the data into both paper and electronic charts,

-Used a glucometer to obtain diabetic patients’ blood sugar level;

- Proficient in documenting both on paper and electronically;

-As an agency mental health technician, I blended into the staff so well that, direct staff had to be reminded that I was not a direct employee.                                                                                       -I am able to establish a solid working rapport with clients and patients without regard to our population of origin or presenting issues;

-I have experience with both voluntarily admitted patients as well as committed (FD-12) patients;

-I am able to obtain a psychosocial history in Spanish that will be culturally valid;
