The Alexandria VA Health Care System is seeking two Physicians (Emergency Room) in Medical Service who will be responsible for providing emergent medical treatment and personal care services to ill and injured veterans on a 24/7 basis.The Alexandria VA Health Care System, Alexandria, Louisiana is a Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 3 facility serving Veterans within 23 of Louisiana's 64 parishes. The VAMC is located in Pineville, Louisiana with community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) in Jennings, Lafayette, Fort Polk, and Natchitoches, Louisiana.

As an Emergency Room physician, you will provide emergent medical
treatment and personal care services to ill and injured veterans. Duties
include documenting observations, assessments, and changes in patient's
condition; collaborating with health team members to facilitate positive
patient care outcomes; ordering appropriate diagnostic tests, determining need
for hospitalization at this facility or transferring the patient to another
facility. Must complete clinical reminders and meet performance measures, as
applicable. Our facility is seeking individuals who possess good organizational
skills which enable completion of work, a demonstrated ability to assume
leadership in a patient centered program, and the ability to establish
effective communication with patients, families, visitors and members of the
interdisciplinary team.
Board Certification: Board certification or Boardeligibilityin emergency medicine, internal Medicine

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Citizenship.
Citizen of the United
States.
Education.
Degree of doctor of
medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in
medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one
of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in
which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
(1)
Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association
of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
(2)
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic
Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
(3)
Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State,
Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia
as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
(4) For residents,
graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required
except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1.
Licensure and Registration: Current, full and unrestricted license to
practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the
United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain
current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for
continuing active, current licensure.
Board Certification:
Certification or
Eligibilityby the American Board of Internal Medicine or other
appropriate specialty certifying boards.
Board certification ir Eligibility in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine or Family
Practice is needed.
First-Year
Residency (Internship). Completed
a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of
Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed. For a VA resident, the
appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment
on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved
residencies are:
(1)
Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American
Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was
completed, or
(2)
Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board
determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional
training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met
if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
Physical Standards: Applicant
must meet the physical requirements of the position. Tentatively selected applicant is subject to
urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants that refuse to be tested will be
denied employment with the VA. (VA
Directive and Handbook 5019).
English Language
Proficiency: Physicians, including residents,
appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and
written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
NOTE:
Incumbent will participate in the Medical Officer of the day on call
(MOD) schedule.
NOTE:
Incumbent will maintain current ACLS/BCLS certifications.
NOTE:

Applicant's education
and experience will be reviewed by a Professional Standards Board and
Compensation Panel in determining the salary of the applicant selected. The recommended salary may be at any point in
