DUTIES:

The Boise VA Medical Center invites applications for a full-time position as a Geriatrician or an Internist with Geriatric experience based at the Boise VA Medical Center.

The Boise VA Medical Center has been academically affiliated with the University of Washington since 1977. It is a University of Washington teaching site for Internal Medicine at both the graduate (3rd and 4th year medical students) and postgraduate (R1 R3) levels. It is also a site for training of Family Practice (R-1) residents, nursing, pharmacy, and other ancillary program students.

Boise is located in scenic southwest Idaho near outstanding outdoor recreational areas for skiing, fishing, hunting, camping, whitewater sports and mountaineering. Boise is the capital of Idaho with numerous state government offices. Prominent local employment includes high-tech industries, corporation headquarters, and health-care. Educational facilities in the area include excellent schools, two universities (one with graduate education opportunities) and a four year liberal arts college. The city supports numerous sports (football, basketball, ice hockey) and cultural (ballet, symphony, theatre companies including an outdoor Shakespeare venue, history and art museums) activities.

Candidates must be a U.S. Citizen and have an M.D. degree. Geriatric Board Certification in Internal Medicine/Family Medicine or Internal Medicine Board Certification with Geriatric Experience is required. The position provides the opportunity to practice Geriatrics in an Ambulatory care, Consultation, Nursing home, and inpatient Rehab practice. Candidates should have demonstrated ability as a clinician and teacher.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy Lifting (45 lbs and over); Moderate Carrying (15-44 lbs); Straight Pulling; Pushing; Reaching above shoulder; Walking (up to 3 hours); Standing (up to 3 hours); Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13"to 16"; Both eyes required; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing (aid permitted).

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must pass pre-employment examination.
  • Designated and/or Random Drug Testing required.
  • Background and/or Security Investigation required.

Required Skills:

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

b. Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

(4) For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1.

c. Licensure and Registration. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country.

d. Board Eligible or Board Certified.
